GARY -- Commissioner Rudy Clay is at it again.
Union trades worker Rodney McNeil started the 18th wheelchair ramp built under Clay's watch at a home in the 3500 block of Adams Street in Gary on Tuesday. Clay, D-Gary, held a news conference Wednesday to talk about his long-term project.
Clay said he used $600 from his campaign fund to have the ramp built for Olivia Bates. McNeil, out of Laborers Local 81, has provided labor for each of the 18 ramps built so far at a reduced rate.
"There are about 67 people in Gary trapped in their homes because they don't have a ramp to get out with. It's also a fire hazard," Clay said. "The city says it cannot afford to build ramps for people who need them. It's very difficult to turn your back on people who are disabled and need these ramps."

Clay said he wants to have a fund-raiser soon to get more money for ramps. He said if he were to raise $30,000, he could provide a ramp for everyone in need, and he plans to scour the area for philanthropists willing to give to the effort.

For more information on the ramps, Clay can be reached at (219) 755-3056 or (219) 881-6078.
