Lake County Commissioner Rudolph Clay continues to lead the charge to obtain utility bill relief for senior citizens. The Commissioner is asking the City of Gary whether some of a $10 million donation from business magnet Donald Trump to the City of Gary, can be used to provide seniors with assistance in paying utility bills during the peak summer season.

Speaking to approximately 1,000 seniors at a hearing which he convened in Gary's City Council Chambers, Commissioner Clay expressed concerns for the financial well being of seniors who struggle on fixed incomes to pay fluctuating utility bills during periods of extreme temperatures.

Clay, who is up for re-election in 2002, said that the issue of financial relief for seniors is "a moral issue and not a political one." The four-term democrat acknowledged that not everyone is pleased with his shining the public spotlight on this issue! "There may be other plans for spending this money, however, the top priority of government should be to help those citizens who are unable to help themselves during times of crises!" Clay said.

Clay, a former State Senator and Gary resident, said that he is not seeking to ruffle any feathers at City Hall or anywhere else, but that he simply could not turn a deaf ear to the pleas for help from neighbors and constituents. He further stated that the humongous turnout among seniors was indicative of the gravity of the situation.

The hearing came on the heals of an initial appeal to the City made by Commissioner Clay and Bishops from major religious denominations. At press time, it was not clear as to any action the city plans to take.
