Event at Genesis Center features Gary ministers, Bible giveaway
By Leslie Jones McCloud, Post-Tribune correspondent

GARY - The Democratic Precinct Organization will host a citywide Bible giveaway and prayer vigil at 10 am Saturday at the Genesis Center.

Pastors from around the city will offer prayers for the city, Lake County, the country, and victims of last month's terrorists attacks.

The vigil is spearheaded by Lake County Commissioner Rudy Clay.

"If we ever needed a Bible or needed a prayer, it's now. Prayer is the most powerful force in the universe," he said.

Clay said many faiths are represented and each minister will offer a short prayer.

Clay expects 140 precinct vice committeemen and women and 288 seniors to participate.

The organization plans to give Bibles to the first 200 people. Also offered are free blood pressure screenings, testing for symptoms of stroke and electronic voting machine training.

"I think it's one of the best things that hit Gary. (Lack of prayer has) been our trouble all along. This should be every week if we can have it," said precinct organization chaplain Mary Washington.

"The whole city can do more than just one of us," she said.

"The country and its leaders have always been a part of the church's prayer but now there is a stronger emphasis," said St. John Baptist Church pastor, the Rev. Raymond McDonald II.
