GARY - Rudy Clay is headed to a third term as chairman of the city's Democratic precinct organization.

Clay, who also is a County Commissioner, is the only candidate to have filed by the Tuesday evening deadline.

County Democratic Chairman Stephen R. Stiglich said the election will be at 6 pm Friday at the Genesis Convention Center.

"I think it is a big compliment from the precinct organization and the people of Gary," Clay said. "The power will remain with the people."

Clay was first elected city chairman in 1993 when he ousted Richard Comer, who also was deputy mayor at the time.

Clay was unopposed for re-election in 1997.

Comer got caught in the fallout of the bitter county chairman's race that saw East Chicago Mayor Robert Pastrick defeat challenger Stiglich.

The chairmanship is key for Clay, who likely will draw a challenge when he runs for re-election as commissioner next year.

The other candidates, who are unopposed, are: Phillis Rosemond, vice chairwoman; Lamar Taylor, treasurer; Shirley Bynum, secretary; and Mary Washington, chaplain.

Katherine Reed-Martin, the longest-serving precinct committeeman in Gary, will step down as vice chairman and will be named vice chairman emeritus.
